File System Snapshots
FolderSizes has the ability to create file system metadata snapshots, from which reports can be generated later on. These point-in-time captures of file system state provide powerful flexibility for analysis and reporting without requiring constant access to the original storage systems.
Strategic Reporting Flexibility
- Generate reports (including searches) in the future without re-scanning
- Generate reports even when the target file system(s) are offline
- Provide reporting & analysis capabilities to users lacking direct file system access
- Create a history of file system state that can be used for trend analysis
Multiple Source Metadata Capture
Snapshots can be created for any file system that is accessible to FolderSizes – including local and remote (network) file systems. A single Snapshot can even contain information about multiple, discrete file system paths (e.g. a combination of both local and remote file systems, for example).
Practical Applications
Organizations leverage snapshots for various purposes:
- Periodic storage auditing without production impact
- Historical record keeping for compliance requirements
- Before/after comparisons for major system changes
- Offline analysis of remote or cloud-based storage
- Delegated reporting without granting direct storage access
